October 2023 Newsletter

Message from the President

Last month Harvey International/Bridge City Tools were scheduled to join us for the Oct 10th Meeting. However, an unavoidable situation prevented them from being there. They did let us know beforehand and said they would like to reschedule for this month’s meeting (Nov 14th). We look forward to having them join us.

We are way behind in our toy making this year due to several reasons. I know you are busy making toys and doing your best. We will be having our toy drive distribution event Nov 18th this year and will need all toy makers not attending the event to bring your finished toys to the Nov 14th meeting. Thank you all for putting in the effort to give our communities’ children a nicer Christmas.

Reminder: We won’t be meeting in December and will have our club officer elections at our January meeting on the 9th.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the November meeting.

Treasurer’s Report

Club treasurer Phyllis Minert presented the treasurer’s report. There were no outstanding debts or requests for payment.

Club Business
Toy Drive: The October 2023 meeting of the Inland Woodworkers was brought to order at 6:00pm by club President Mike Trejo. There were 18 members in attendance. The first order of business was to discuss the upcoming Toy Distribution event. It will be held on November 18th from 10am to 1pm at the Jurupa Valley Children and Family Services center (3924 Riverview Drive, Jurupa Valley). Our event coordinator, Mike Sullivan, unfortunately will not be in attendance. He and his wife, club member Judy Sullivan, are both currently experiencing some health issues. Our prayers go out to the Sullivan family for speedy recoveries.

Mike has been the prominent contributor of toys for the annual event. We’ll need everyone to increase their efforts to compensate for Mike’s absence. If you are not be attending the event in person, please bring your toys to the November 14th Inland Woodworkers monthly meeting.

Inventory Update. Kenneth Thomas recently placed an order of $2500 for toy part accessories (mostly wheels). He noted that this same quantity last year cost the club about $1000. We now have wheels in 1-1/4”, 1-3/4”, and 2” sizes.

Titebond expressed interest in supporting our Toy Drive event, and offered to send a box of Type 2 and Type 3 glue. Good timing, as we are nearing depletion of our inventory (one box of Type-1 glue remaining).

Joinery. Chuck Petrovich discussed a Greene & Greene Furniture class he took years ago on making wood joints. It was a two-day, hands-on course that provided instruction and guidance on making several joint types. Chuck brought in an example that he kept from the class.

And he reminded us of the old adage, “If you give a kid a toy, he will have a toy. But if you teach him to make toys, he will have a lifetime of joy.” And in many cases, a garage filled with tools!

501(c)3 update. The individual assigned by the accounting firm to work on our filing is no longer with the company. The firm is currently looking for a replacement to finalize our application. This should not impact our goal to achieve non-profit status by the end of 2023.

Local Business Report. Mike Trejo informed us of a local company, Railer Tools (3200 Gausti Rd, Ontario, CA 91761, 877-4-RAILER) that makes driver bits. He field-tested some of their items and found the quality to be very good. Check out their website (https://railertools.com) for more details.

Show & Tell

Chuck Petrovich’s daughter asked him to make her an owl house.

After a bit of research on the internet, he designed and built his first owl house. Apparently, owls start looking for their nests in January, so the vacancy sign shouldn’t last long!

Chuck saw a cat feeder on Facebook. His first one sold immediately, as these are very popular items.

Summer is vacation time, and that inspired Ray Gonzales to make a camper trailer. The camper was made using his scrollsaw, and the car was cut using his bandsaw.

Ernie Gonzalez made some freestanding dinosaurs.
