June 2023 Newsletter

Message from the President

If you haven’t already began, we all need to start making toys for the end of the year toy distribution event held in November each year. We made nearly 4000 toys last year and our goal is to surpass that number. Mike Sullivan is our club’s toy drive coordinator. You can pass along all questions about toy making and the toy distribution event to him or any other club officer. Also, we distribute wood and pre-manufactured wheels and axles, as well as other toy components such as headlights, etc. to those making toys. In return for the wood, we need you to provide a few toys we can take to Ganahl Lumber to trade for the wood. We provide a few toys and they provide pallets of wood.

Also, July 25-28 in Las Vegas, NV is the bi-annual AWFS Fair (www.awfsfair.org). It’s the largest woodworking event this year. Some of our members will be manning the Society of Woodworking Manufacturing (SWM) booth. SWM is an AWFS chapter focused on industry education support by supporting high school wood shop programs in southern California. SWM supports the Skills USA competitions each year, as well as annual Manufacturing Day activities, High School wood shop end-of-year banquets, and numerous other activities. SWM connects the wood shop students, High School teachers, and counselors to the industry. It’s a fun event with lots of activities. Come by the SWM Booth #1277 and say hi. Be sure to let them know you’re an Inland Woodworker’s Assn. Member.

Treasurer’s Report

Club treasurer Phyllis Minert presented the treasurer’s report. There were no outstanding debts or requests for payment.

Club Business
Club President Mike Trejo tapped his gavel at 6:00 pm to commence the June meeting of the Inland Woodworkers. There were 19 members in attendance. He began the meeting by welcoming back Tom Householder, who recently took a fall and broke some bones. Tom remarked that he was here but still broken. It’s good to see that Tom is healing quickly and hasn’t lost his sense of humor!

Canopy update – Mike T went to EZ Up in Norco and purchased a commercial grade pop-up with wheels for transporting. The list price was $400, the club purchase price was $288. Mike also purchased sandbags for the legs.

AWFS Fair – the event will be held July 25-28 at the Las Vegas Convention Center West. We still have a few open spots in the SWM booth. The volunteer list includes Chris Thomas, Michael Miller, Rick Reimer, and Mike Trejo. One more volunteer is still needed. Rick DuVall will be at the show and could assist. The club will be giving away 500 mallets (125 per day), some space ships (requires a $5 donation), and some Millenium Falcons (requires a $10 donation). There will also be a daily raffle for a large Millenium Falcon chip & dip tray. Beam me up, Scotty.

IW will be sharing the 20×30 foot booth with Paton Group. They will have a laser unit onsite to personalize the mallets. Additional details can be found at https://www.awfsfair.org/.

Rockler discount cards – Rockler has provided the club with 10% discount cards. Please contact Michael Miller to receive one.

Toys needed – Ganahl Lumber has been furnishing the club with lumber to use in our annual toy drives. They are asking the club to provide some toys that they can use to entertain kids while their parents shop. Ganahl Lumber has been very supportive of our toy drive; please help them by bringing some toys to the July meeting.

Blue Jay Fund Raiser – Rick Reimer, Nathan Lindsey, and Chuck Petrovich manned the IW booth. Due to inclement weather, the event was not well attended. Chuck graciously donated some of his unsold items to the club for an upcoming fund raiser.

Downtown Riverside Farmers Market and Wellness Fair – this event will be held on July 1 from 8 am to 1 pm. The location is Main Street between 5th and 6th Streets in Downtown Riverside. Mike T has arranged for a booth. Bring your crafts to self for yourself or for the club. Event details can be found at: https://www.riversideca.gov/calendar/event/downtown-riverside-certified-farmers-market?date=Saturday%2C%20July%201%2C%202023. *** Event has been postponed ***

Show & Tell

This truck was made by Ray Van Zant and given to Chuck Petrovich as a gift.

Chuck shared this napkin holder scroll saw project. The design is shown in the summer issue of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts magazine.

He also shared his dog bowl project.

Chuck has a similar version with holes for 4″ flower pots. Very popular at the craft fairs. And here is his deck bear:

Rick DuVall finished his shot glass case, which he is making for Tim at House of Plywood. It holds 16 shot glasses and has a light. The shelves are made from plexiglass. He used a small edge beading router bit, and then finished the edges using a flame polishing technique.

He also brought in his family heirloom cradle. He’s had 3 nephews sleep in it. Next up will be Kenneth’s new baby!

Rick used quarter sawn white oak. The rocking mechanism uses T-nuts and bearings:

Mike Sullivan made this plaque for Ernie Gonzalez using a laser burner:

Arlan Van Zant brought in his cutting board, made from screwbean mesquite.
