Message from the President

The AWFS Fair is rapidly approaching. If you’re planning to attend, be sure to stop by and say hello. We’ll be manning the SWM Make and Take booth, number 1277. And join us for dinner on Thursday, July 26, at Pizza Rock restaurant in downtown Las Vegas. Stop by the booth for additional details.

We’re halfway through the year and getting closer to our annual toy drive. Time to start cutting, sanding, and assembling. Bring some toys to the August meeting to replenish your parts and lumber needs. Stay safe in the heat and remember to hydrate.

Treasurer’s Report

Club treasurer Phyllis Minert presented the treasurer’s report. There were no outstanding debts or requests for payment.

Club Business

The June meeting of the Inland Woodworkers commenced at 6:00 pm, with club president Mike Trejo at the helm. There were 16 members in attendance. Mike discussed the upcoming AWFS Fair, July 25-28, at the Las Vegas Convention Center West. Chris Thomas is laser cutting the spacecraft (i.e., the Millenium Falcons) and X-wing star fighters (i.e., the Corellian attack fighters). Kenneth Thomas is working on the mallets. IW members will be manning the SWM booth (1277). If you still need a registration ticket, contact Mike T.

501(c)3 update: Chuck Petrovich’s neighbor, a lawyer, agreed to assist the club with preparing paperwork for establishing IRS tax status. The next step is to find a CPA to assist with the accounting related tasks. If you know anyone willing to work pro-bono, please contact Mike T. If the paperwork is completed by November 1, all donations in 2024 will be eligible for tax exemption. Mike has 4 donors in the queue, waiting for our club status to be established.

The Downtown Riverside Farmers Market, scheduled for July 1, was cancelled. It will be rescheduled, at which time IW will receive an invitation.

Miscellaneous
Kenneth Thomas’s wife is scheduled for delivery on July 24th. Our best wishes for a healthy and happy new baby!

Mike Sullivan brought in a box of 100 toys for the annual toy drive.

For Sale – Chuck Petrovich’s neighbor in Lake Arrowhead has a radial arm saw for sale. It is in relatively new condition, with only 5 hours of use. Contact Chuck for details.

We will have lumber and toy parts at the August meeting. Remember to bring some toys to the meeting in order to receive materials.

Nathan Lindsey is preparing to move from Glen Oak to Nashville Tennessee. Before leaving, he is offering to trade some of his lumber inventory for woodworking related training. If you have some time and woodworking skills worth sharing, please contact Nathan to coordinate.

Show & Tell

Rick DuVall shared a photo of the display he built for his wife’s new bakery business. The facade was built from siding, the table was made from knotty alder, and the A-frame stands are made from beech.

The platforms were resawn using a multi-step process, first by table saw cutting the edges, then band saw cutting the wood in half, and finally planing the sides to proper thickness.

Chuck Petrovich shared a designer box. The body is made from Baltic birch, and the top is made from purple heart.

Chuck also made a wagon planter. The wheels were custom made.

Rick Reimer made a CNC cut cribbage board. He used a boring bit to peck cut drill the 1/8″ diameter holes at 0.04″ deep.

Rick also made a wood barbecue grill scraper from hickory using his CNC machine. He used a ball nose bit to cut the curves and slopes, and a laser burner to engrave the text.

Rick presented the scraper to club president Mike Trejo as a gift. Happy barbecuing!
Arlen Van Zant made drink coasters from mesquite. He finished them with Osmo oil, which he highly recommends.

Ray Van Zant brought in a wooden truck and toy race car.
