With rain on the horizon, Rockler hosted our May meeting inside their Ontario CA store. There were 11 attendees at the meeting, including new member Aaron Romero and returning member Gary Anthony. This was Gary’s first meeting since the pandemic – welcome back!
This month’s training topic was stacked text, or more simply, text on top of text. Today’s instructor was Rick Reimer.
This lesson makes use of some new features found in Vectric version 11.5, as well as enhancements over older versions. The project is a single-side job. It uses the Layer feature for designing the individual text layouts, and then stacks the layers to complete the machining processes.
Begin by drawing a rectangle on the first layer. It will be used to set the top text field. Remember to use the corner type and size options:
Now enter your text for the top layer. Use the spacing options so that the letters can be machined (i.e., provide enough gap so the router bit can fit between the letters).
Vectric has tools for text alignment and centering.
Repeat the process for the second layer. Once the text has been generated for each layer, use the Copy function to copy each text field to the Merged layer. Then, convert the text to curves, making any necessary adjustments, and group the letters.
Next, weld the top and bottom text layers into a separate layer. This will allow for creating the tool paths without directly affecting the original text fields.
Now its time to generate the machining steps. Cut a top pocket to machine the upper text field. Note that Vectric 11.5 allows you to select 2 end mill sizes. Generate the top pocket, and then generate the paths for the bottom text layer. Finally, export the paths to your machine and verify your results.
Note – this is the first project in the 2023 CNC Monthly Challenge, so remember to bring your project to next month’s meeting. Each month’s participation will bring you one step closer to winning the grand prize!
Next month’s training will include box joints and 2-sided machining.
SHOW & TELL
Kenneth Thomas shared a dust chute he was building for his CNC machine.
Rick Reimer showed his version of the 2-sided machining project from the April CNC training:
John Kimbro brought in his CNC carved egg, which he finished with lacquer.
Keith Helberg brought in his example of 2-sided machining from last month’s training.
MISCELLANEOUS
Fellow woodworker Tom Householder sustained an injury recently. We wish him well in his recovery and look forward to seeing him at our meetings again.
