June 2024 Newsletter

by Michael Miller

Message from the President

There has been lots of activity and interest in the pursuit of our clubs non-profit filing status in this last month. We are moving ever closer of achieving our goals. It shouldn’t be long now.

The July 4th Independence Day holiday is coming up so we’ll be moving our CNC Meeting to 13 July so as not to interfere with the holiday weekend celebrations. It’s summertime and that brings a lot of activities, outdoor fun and additional safety concerns. Please be safe in this hot environment. If you are planning trips or get-togethers, I hope you have the time of your lives and enjoy all the things these summer months can bring.

This time of year can provide the opportunity to up your toy count. Jurupa Valley Adopt-A-Family has asked for 300 toys for their Christmas in July Celebration. Our toys are popular with the children, and I believe it’s another chance to do something good for the community. It will take place Sunday, July 28th at Vernola Park in Jurupa Valley. I’ll be hitting you up for toys for this event. I’ll be volunteering time to help and welcome anyone of you if you wish to join me.

Have a great rest of June and I hope to see you July 9th at the July meeting and on the 13th at the CNC meeting.

Treasurer’s Report
Club treasurer Phyllis Minert presented the treasurer’s report. All transactions have been reconciled.

Club Business

Club President Mike Trejo brought the meeting to order at 6 pm; there were 18 in attendance.

501 (C)3 Updates: The Articles of Incorporation have been filed with California. A copy of the Bylaws was given to each attendee for review. This document will be voted on during the July meeting. Mike Trejo gave an update on the options for a future IW building. He is working on a business plan for this. Thus far, the club has spent approximately $300 for filing fees and $200 for the mailing address. Ken Thomas suggested forming an IW Steering Committee, which would meet monthly via an online Zoom call. The committee would discuss budgeting, finances, planning, business plans, etc. Times and days will be discussed in an upcoming meeting. Once the 501(C)3 status has been achieved, a city business license and liability insurance will be obtained.

Club dues: after lengthy discussion, it was agreed that the club would not require any dues at this time. The topic will be deferred to the steering committee.

Grants: Ken Thomas discussed the topic of grants. To qualify, IW must show community involvement. Our annual toy drive is an excellent example. Ken recommended that we track our time spent on Inland Woodworking related tasks. Other examples include time spent designing and building toys and supporting SkillsUSA and SWM events.

Stickers: Ken Thomas made a suggestion for the club to purchase stickers with the IW logo. Rick DuVall made a motion to pursue the purchase, up to $100. Ken Thomas seconded the motion. There was no further discussion. A vote was held, with unanimous approval. Approximate sizes will be 1” x 3”. Ken’s sister is a graphic artist and will create the design.

Toy Parts: if you need wheels, axles, or other parts, contact Ken Thomas in advance of the meeting, and he will bring your items to the meeting.

Show & Tell

Rick DuVall brought in samples of his rolling cube (tumbling block) cutting boards, which were made from cherry, maple, and Brazilian walnut. Each material is cut into 60-degree diamond strips. There are 3 glue-ups and 4 cutting operations required. After assembly, he squares the ends and sands to the final thickness. His family members were the lucky recipients of this batch.

Rick also brought in some of his checkerboard cutting boards.

Chuck Petrovich shared a dog leash holder that he made for his daughter. He used English walnut obtained in Carlsbad, and Canary wood.

Ken Thomas was contacted by an arboretum in San Diego to make bird houses for the California Blue Bird Recovery program. They requested rough cut, unfinished lumber that would decompose over time.

Ken also found a woodpeckers-knockoff pocket rule set; these are currently on sale at Amazon for about $28.

RJ Monsma has been making wood shower basket S-hooks out of cedar wood. He posted his design and quickly received 50 orders.

Ray Gonzales has been busy making toys for the club’s annual toy drive. Tonight, he presented his Flintstone jalopy car, a race car made from the wood donated by Royal Custom Designs (https://www.facebook.com/RoyalCustomDesigns/), and a fleet of different sized airplanes. These are sure to bring smiles to the recipients!

Club Secretary Michael Miller brought in some robot toys that he is making from the wood donated by Royal Custom Designs. This batch was made from walnut and oak.

Rick DuVall shared photos of his craps table project. By the time this newsletter gets posted, he will have the entire table assembled and in full use.
