Fixing Screw Holes with Toothpicks

by James Gleason

I was asked to provide a quick tip-  This is one that I have used on several occasions-  its using toothpicks to fill gaps and especially to repair screw holes!
I have an 1899 house, and on some of the doors in the house, there have been several screws that were stripped out.  In order to use the same location, I had to fill in the hole.  I used glue and toothpicks so that it would have something to dig in to.  It was super easy.
I started with a bunch of glue in the hole.  I then started adding toothpicks, and started tapping them in with a block of wood when the fit was tight.  I let it dry overnight and then sawed it off flush.
This has many applications for that Wordworking.  Any type of loose hinge or decorative item that might be coming loose.
I picked it up from: https://www.oldtownhome.com/2011/9/9/Solve-Your-Sagging-Hinges-with-Toothpicks-and-Glue/

The website has some great pictures along with the how-to.
I will hopefully find some of the pictures I have taken of my repairs and will bring them and I will also do a quick demo at our meeting.

Thanks,Jim Gleason
